W. C. Field said, “Even a dead fish can swim downstream, but it takes a live one to swim upstream.”

What are some of examples of those who “go with the flow” and identify those who “swim upstream.” Use three categories: Biblical, historical, and personal examples. Share examples and discuss the implications of their choices."

The word counterculture means to choose, act, or speak contrary of with norms or trends in society. "In what areas of life do you see believers needing courage to 'swim upstream'?"

Insight

The Bible discussion begins with a careful reading of the whole passage, either from your own Bibles, or from the provided images below.

Then participants are to ask:

  1. What is going on in this passage of Scripture?
  2. What are the key words and phrases? Highlight them.
  3. Why do you think this passage is included in the Bible?
  4. What does it contribute to our “knowing Christ” and “living in Christ”?

Today’s Scripture passage: Mark 1:32-39

32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.

Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place
35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

Mark 1:21-39 delineates a full day of activities in Christ's life. When you read the whole section, you will notice that Jesus, after a full day of healing, begins the end of the Sabbath with a flood of people calling for help. How would you describe the day? Hectic? Chaotic? Full? Overwhelming? What word seems to capture the long day?

When have you witnessed someone who chose to move in a direction that surprised others? Hearing a calling or a conviction that others don't see or understand might result in loneliness or isolation. What is the relationship between unpopular choices and the season of prayer?

Consider Jesus's words: "This is why I came?" (John 12:27; John 17:4; John 18:37; John 9:39; Luke 19:10; Mark 10:45; John 10:10) Read the context and ask: Is this going with the flow or swimming upstream in the world today?

Considering the pressures and expectations around Jesus, how do you think he maintained clarity and focus on his mission amidst popularity and demands?
