One of the greatest mysteries in the human story has to do with understanding the origin of evil. Ultimately, what people think about God becomes the most important thought any human will ever have.
OVERVIEW
Which came first—the chicken or the egg? It’s an age-old question. Most people dismiss it as a useless question. However, it’s actually a deep philosophical one. Another question comes to mind—which came first, sin or salvation? Our lesson today begins to tackle this question.

TRANSITION
Choices! Everyone makes choices. You decided to get out of bed this morning, what clothes to wear, whether to come to Sabbath School or not, and the list can go on and on. Some choices are just choices, but others have implications that could affect the remainder of your life: what school to go to, who to date, to be vaccinated or not to be vaccinated. In today’s lesson we are about to look into the choices Lucifer made and the choices God made.
BIBLE STUDY GUIDE
Read Isaiah 14:12-14.
12 How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!
13 You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”
QUESTIONS
Read 1 John 3:4.
4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
QUESTION
Read Ezekiel 28:11-17.
11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“ ‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: carnelian, chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.
14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.
15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you.
16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings. [CM4]
Read Revelation 12:7-9.
7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.
QUESTIONS
Read Romans 5:8.
8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
COMMENTARY
“He [Satan] was not immediately dethroned when he first ventured to indulge the spirit of discontent and insubordination, nor even when he began to present his false claim and lying representations before the loyal angels. Long was he retained in heaven. Again and again was he offered pardon on condition of repentance and submission. Such efforts as God alone could make, were made to convince him of his error, and restore him to the path of rectitude. God would preserve the order of the heavens, and had Lucifer been willing to return to his allegiance, humble and obedient, he would have been re-established in his office as covering cherub. But as he stubbornly justified his course, and maintained that he had no need of repentance, it became necessary for the Lord of heaven to vindicate His justice and the honor of His throne; and Satan and all who sympathized with him were cast out.” (The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, pp. 319, 320.)
APPLICATION
At some point, God allows us to make our own choices. However, in Ephesians 1:4-5, God chose us to be His children and live in harmony with Him. He gives us the freedom to choose which makes His love for us and our love for Him so meaningful. Imagine if our parents threw us out of the house the first time we made a mistake—how long would you have survived? God treats us, His children, even better than our parents could imagine doing! Not only does He not disown us, but He chases us down and tears down the barriers between us so that there can be no excuse for not following Him if we want too!
FOLLOW UP
Listen to or read the lyrics of the following songs:
Write a prayer to God about how you are feeling about your relationship with Him and invite Him to take your relationship with Him to the next level.
OVERVIEW
Many of us know the scintillating story of the devil’s fall from heaven, and the war of ages that ensued because of it. But, going over it, I have found a few important factors to note. Lucifer was the head angel, the highest-ranking created being of the universe, and the closest to the Godhead. On top of all this, he was the most beautiful being to ever exist in heaven, as depicted in Ezekiel 28:12-14. No one will truly know when exactly Lucifer began to have feelings of rebellion, but it has been said that it was around the time of the creation.
The Godhead planned and executed the creation of this perfect earth, and Lucifer felt angry that he was not included. As his vanity grew over the years, he felt his self-importance rising, and as a result, he felt that he was important enough to be included in these plans. So, we could infer that his first sin was selfishness; wanting to exalt his vanity and feeling demeaned when he did not get what he wanted. This initial selfishness grew and grew, and soon he didn’t just want to be included with the Godhead, he wanted to be God. Isaiah 14:12-14 depicts the extent of his ambition and the twisted ideas of grandeur as he strove to place himself above God and become the supreme being of the universe. These ideas of splendor were spread across the heavens, and although a large portion rejected this sinful idea, many were convinced of its verity.
Now, Lucifer had built an army. He had all the means necessary to go to war with the Godhead. As Ezekiel 28:16 describes, Lucifer was “filled with violence,” and forged a war that got him and his followers kicked out of heaven. Looking back, it seems highly foolish of Lucifer to even propose that he could become God or higher than God. I mean, he was the closest being to witnessing the power and splendor of God; how could he think that he could overcome Him? The answer lies in jealousy, the selfishness of Lucifer that by the spread of sin on earth has infiltrated into our lives, causing blindness and motives driven by twisted passion and an idea of self above anything. When we put ourselves above anything, we become the paragon of foolishness and irrationality. We should always strive to be on God’s side, praying and asking Him to remove the covers of sin from our eyes.
“It’s All About Me”
Have you ever met someone who only thinks about themselves?

SUMMARY
Lucifer’s sin of selfishness and quest to become “the best” cost him dearly. Once the prized gem of the heavens, he is now the foolish laughingstock of this corrupt world. When we are selfish, our brains become clouded, and our wisdom becomes corrupted. All we can think about is ourselves, and we do anything to achieve these motives. As a result, we become a spectacle, a symbol of foolishness and danger that the rest of the world can laugh at. That is what Lucifer is now, a fool who keeps trying to win a war that everyone else knows is impossible to win because it is already won. His selfishness has taken him past the point of no return. Luckily, we are not in such a dire fate. Because Jesus won the battle, we can turn around and accept this offer. What will you choose, to be the spectacle of the world, or the gem of God?
APPLICATIONS
The story of the fall of Lucifer is a dire but important warning to us as members of the remnant in this corrupted world. It is always a necessary part of studying to sit back and meditate on how a story applies to us today as youth. Below you will find three applications that can benefit the youth in your group and help them meditate on the word shared today. These applications work both individually and in a group.
We all sometimes have feelings of selfishness; it’s natural. One of the easiest ways to combat this mentality of “me, myself, and I” is by focusing on someone else’s needs. You could go about this in a few different ways, whether it be service to someone in need, or even being attentive to a friend or church member’s needs.
We’ve all heard of God, probably believe in God, and overall accept God as the supreme being of the universe. We know He is a deity, someone who sits high above us. None of us have been able to see God, due to the sinfulness of the world that we live in. However, one could argue that Lucifer, knowing God, still fell for sin. So, how do we prevent that? The answer is not just to know God, but to understand God. If we understand who He is and His role in our lives and, most importantly, what He has done for us, then we are more likely to be willing to be in His flock.
Have you noticed how this world has become so vain? We are so consumed trying to earn more, get more, become better than our coworkers, etc. Vanity is a part of selfishness, and it cost Lucifer dearly. Being vain clouds our judgment and prevents us from making good connections and even missing out on an opportunity. Sometimes, searching for more material gain and having unrealistic ambitions actually bring us down in the long run. As Ecclesiastes 5:10 says, the love of money is a dangerous road to take.
